October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Elmore County Commission recognized the importance of education at their regular meeting Tuesday evening.
The Commission signed a proclamation recognizing both the week and also the Family Sunshine Center for the work they do to combat domestic violence and offer help to victims.
The proclamation stated Alabama is a place where we should protect our children, create opportunities to stabilize and strengthen families and intervene if cycles of abuse and domestic violence.
Every year, thousands of Alabamians fall victim to domestic violence. It is a widespread form of aggravated crime, and the toughest for victims to flee.
Domestic violence is a serious crime that affects persons of all races, ages, income levels, religions and genders. The goal is to educate and promote a better understanding of domestic violence and its long-lasting impact on citizens, families and communities.
Children raised in a home with domestic violence are three times more likely to perpetrate violence as an adult. Addressing domestic violence demands that we create and support a multifaceted response including a system of emergency support and crisis intervention, but also safe shelter, counseling, advocacy, and community networks that support survivors and their families through the healing process.
“The Elmore County Commission does hereby proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We recognize staff, board members, and friends of the Family Sunshine Center for providing hope and healing to victims of domestic violence. We appreciate their commitment to increasing public awareness of domestic violence and sending a clear message that domestic violence is not tolerated in Alabama. We join with others across Alabama and our nation in supporting victims of domestic violence, and take time to reflect on the issue, its implications, and proactive ways to assist victims,” the resolution states.
