Tuesday night the Autauga County Commission recognized and read in a proclamation naming September as Action Awareness Month.

The proclamation states that 13.3% of Autauga County residents are food insecure and the need to organize emergency food programs within the county is vital. While there are many within Autauga County, each plays a critical role in combating hunger at a local level.

The Heart of Alabama Food Bank helps service and provide food to 14 different food banks within Autauga County. The Autauga County Commission encourages citizens as well as commissioners that are able to engage, volunteer and donate to the Heart of Alabama Good Bank, which provides food and services to 12 counties in the state.

They also partner with over 200 agencies that serve through a variety of programs, including programs in Autauga County.

In the past year alone, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank has provided over 620 ,000 meals to Autauga County residents.

The Director of Corporate Engagement for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank is Margen Menefee. She accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization. On their website, their mission states that they source, acquire and distribute nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity throughout the region. This is to ensure that families, seniors and children are able to thrive.

“I just want to say thank you for our partnership with you all, especially the past year. We appreciate the extra support, especially this year. I have been able to share that all across our state and you really are a leader in inviting food insecurities awareness on our children, thank you,” Menefee said to the Commission.
