The Autauga County Commission approved a bid to Stallings & Sons Inc. for the cleaning and remediation of the Autauga Metro Jail, phase one. This is after over a month of back and forth and controversy over the evacuation of the Metro Jail in early June.

Autauga County Sherif Mark Harrell made the decision to evacuate the jail due to mold and other health and safety concerns, amid other alleged facility issues as well.

Autauga County Commission Treasurer and Administrator Scott Kramer confirmed that two bids for the cleaning and remediations of the Jail were received. The lowest bid was Stallings & Sons with a cost of $575 ,516 where Kramer confirmed they will start next week.

All Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the remediation.

The Commissioners also voted in favor of upping the funding for vehicle maintenance and funding for fuel for the Autauga County Sheriff’s department by $25,000 for each resolution.

This is a proactive measure to ensure there is funding for the repairs and fueling to continue, as for the Sheriff’s Department to not have to continue to put both these requests on the agenda each meeting.

However, the Commissioners did not approve the reimbursement to the Sheriff Discretionary Fund in the amount of $25,768.76 for setting up the jail processing center inside the Sheriff’s office. Commissioner Larry Stoudemire made a motion, and the resolution died with lack of a second.

The Commission also did not approve the purchase order to pay the attorney fees for the Sheriff of Autauga County, Sheriff Harrel. Commissioner Larry Stoudemire made a motion, and the resolution died with lack of a second.

In closing comments, Chairman Jay Thompson stated to be careful with school starting back up, and to keep teachers, bus drivers, security officers, crossing guards, parents and the schools.

“There’s a lot of people that make the wheel go round and let’s keep everyone in our prayers,” Thompson said.
