LEE COUNTY – At the request of the Opelika Police Department, Special Agents with Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting, involving officers with the Opelika Police Department.
On Tuesday, June 11, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers with the Opelika Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 near Exit 58 in Lee County. Once on scene, officers encountered an individual with a knife. After repeated verbal commands to drop the knife, the individual charged towards the officers with the knife causing police to engage and shoot the suspect. The suspect, later identified as Damion Laddal Jones, 33, of Easley, S.C., was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
