The Prattville City Council met Tuesday evening where the council and everyone in attendance not only honored veterans in the community, they also honored the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice in light of Memorial Day. The Council also honored Kaden Walker on his contest winnings with the local American Legion.
Vice Commander for the state of Alabama Willie Rogers introduced Walker. Walker is the winner of this year’s Department of Alabama Oratorical Contest. Rogers confirmed that Walker competed in Michigan against 52 other contestants from 48 states and foreign countries.
Walker made the final 16 at this international competition. Walker won $2,500. Rogers confirmed that Walker had also won a $16,000 scholarship last year from the Boys State for his leadership qualities.
“He has been a great representative for the American Legion and the state of Alabama as well as the City of Prattville,” Rogers said.
The Boy Scouts were also in attendance Tuesday night. Troops 111 and 311 were in attendance to receive their citizen of the community merit badges for attending the meeting. The Scoutmaster of Troop 311 introduced everyone and thanked the council for giving them the opportunity to earn their merit badges.
The Council also heard from Krystle Stell, a CPA with and director for Mauldin & Jenkins in the Birmingham, Alabama office. Stell performed the necessary and required audits of the City of Prattville financials and reported nothing out of the ordinary. Stell stated everything went smoothly, and Prattville gave full cooperation.
City Planner Scott Stephens and City Attorney Andrew Odem addressed the Council with the first initial plan for the redistricting map, for the upcoming redistricting of the election districts of the City of Prattville.
Stephens stressed that they are still accepting and welcoming public input. The next step in this phase will be a public hearing regarding this plan one map, which will be announced soon.

On the consent agenda, the council approved the petition to form the Riverfell Improvement District, which was approved by the planning commission on the July 21st meeting back in 2022. No further information was given at the City Council meeting.
The Council approved the company Construction One to undertake Project Star in the former Whitney Bank building behind the City Anex building.
The Council also approved the partnership with the City of Prattville and the Alabama Department of Transportation, ALDOT, to widen and add turn lanes as well as traffic improvements to Fairview Avenue to Jasmine Trail.
