Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun! The 19th Annual Senior Citizen Banquet will be held on June 1st from 4-7 p.m. at the North Highland Memorial Community Center, where the event is Sunday dress attire.
The theme this year is Hope in God’s Compassion, where the colors of this year’s event are pink and white, event coordinator Barara Robinson confirmed, where the pink represents compassion and calmness. This event is free to all seniors, there will be live entertainments, dinner, door prizes and gifts that the event coordinators, Mary Adair and Barbara Robinson, have put together.
“This is a program that God gave me the vision of, and this is something that he has placed on my heart. I just get the thrill and excitement of just knowing that they love it and they get excited about the banquet,” Robinson said.
Each year has a different theme and a different scripture dedicated to the event. This year’s theme, Hope in God’s Compassion, Robinson stated that the compassion is showing that God has compassion and love for us, no matter the condition anyone is in.
“Have compassion for seniors, the sacrifices that they have made for us to get to where we are today have been huge. They went through a lot and the senior people made their way through for us. Now we need to show that love of giving back,” Robinson said.
Every year the banquet strategically takes place on the first Saturday in June, to offset Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, graduations and prom, to give the senior community an event geared towards them too. With preparations starting six months and more in advance.
The banquet is geared towards the senior citizen community. However, Robinson stressed that if you know an elderly person or even an older individual, come and have fun.
“We don’t know how long we have here on earth, but I’m going to continue to do this as long as I can because I just love it, and hopefully that’s a long time. I just get so excited for this,” Robinson said.
This event strictly runs on donations from year to year, Robinson confirmed, where she is in the works of starting another senior citizen event night in the near future and will need further donations to continue. Regarding donations or questions, Robinson can be reached by phone at 334-546-3491.
