Every year in May, the United States celebrates National Police Week to honor the brave men and women who serve in law enforcement. This year, from May 12 to May 18, 2024, communities across the country come together to show appreciation for the dedication, service, and sacrifices of our police officers.
The Origins and Significance of Police Week
National Police Week was established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which it falls as Police Week.
The week we honor fallen officers and provide support to their families. It’s a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities and to express gratitude to those who continue to protect us daily.
National Police Week is more than a series of events; it’s a time for reflection, remembrance, and community support. It underscores the importance of law enforcement officers and their role in maintaining public safety. By honoring those who have fallen and supporting their families, we reinforce the bond between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
