On Tuesday, Millbrook Middle School hosted their annual Divas and Donuts event in the school cafeteria.
Over 200 female students attended with their mothers or mother figure.
“We were so excited to have this event for mothers and mother figures,” said Tarica Lamar, Principal of MMS.
This year, Commissioner Desirae Jackson was the guest speaker. Letitia Ruffin-Johnson, Assistant Principal for 5/6th grade, was in charge of putting together the event.
The Women in the Making organization helped assist in organizing this event.
All guests enjoyed Kingdom Dough donuts, pastries, coffee, and juice. Door prizes provided by the school were given out.
“It was an absolute honor to speak with our young ladies of Millbrook. I wanted to give them a true-life story to encourage them that they can be successful in following their dreams no matter what obstacles may come their way. You will run into some situations that may feel like you’re being setback, but you cannot let your troubles define you. You will always overcome your troubles, and those troubles will make you greater. I also wanted the young ladies to know to always love and respect their parents! You may feel at times, when you’re young, that they are just being hard on you and not allowing you to do whatever you want to do but they truly have your best interest in heart. Furthermore, I wanted the young ladies to understand they can achieve their goals and be anything that they want to be and make their community a better place. I truly enjoyed the Divas and Donuts event. I think it is powerful to have local speakers come and give encouraging words to our youth. We must invest in all that they do as they are our future,” said Commissioner Jackson.
Principal Lamar spoke on how it is important to see parents show up at the school and be involved in every aspect of their child’s education. She had the opportunity to speak with the parents about the importance of ACAP Testing and making sure their child is at school on time and ready to test.
“We were very fortunate to have Commissioner Jackson come and speak. Our young ladies need to see positive role models that can pour into them. I look forward this event next year,” said Principal Lamar.
“I truly feel that the message by Ms. Jackson was well received by the girls from Millbrook Middle and the attendees,” said Letitia Ruffin-Johnson.
Mrs. Ruffin-Johnson believes that the message of not allowing anyone to define your future is one that resonates with children and adults alike. She believes Commissioner Jackson gave the young ladies advice that will help them be successful in the classroom as far as not giving up on their dreams and to work hard for what you want.
She also shared tips with them on how not to destroy their reputation. Posting images on social media platforms can ruin your chances of getting into the colleges and universities if their choice and even from obtaining certain jobs.
