The Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Prattville hosted a Farm city week proclamation at the cotton field at 1001 McQueen Smith Road South located across from the Prattville YMCA Tuesday morning.
Mayor Bill Gillespie and county commissioner and chairman Jay Thompson both read proclamations highlighting the importance of farming to the Prattville community and signified the week of November 13-17th as national farm city week.
Mike Lamar, Farm City chairmen, was also in attendance and expressed his gratitude and how important it is that the Autauga county government and the city of Prattville is supporting the agricultural community. Lamar also has his own small cattle herd and has been a part of Farm City Week for several years.
“Daniel Pratt, I think, would be very proud of what he would have seen here,” Gillespie said. “It has brought so many people together out of necessity. He was able to put Autauga county on the map but agriculture came first. I’m so proud of the community and the farmers who have helped make it what we are today,” Gillespie said.
Chairman Thompson also read a proclamation calling attention to the wide variety of farming here in Autauga county and how important each industry is to the community.
“I feel very fortunate that I live in a county that is considered a rural county. As a young child growing up I was loading hay bales, picking watermelons and pulling weeds out of cotton fields, which was terrible,” Thompson said with a laugh. “I appreciate the farmers we do have, it’s not just the cotton and the corn, it’s the pine trees too and I appreciate everything planted in our county,” Thompson said.
To end Farm City week, the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Farm City Banquet on Thursday Nov, 16th from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Tickets are still available for purchase by either calling in or visiting the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce website.
