This is in response to the editorial Angie Hayden wrote concerning the Autauga Prattville Public Library.

First let me fess up, I have not personally verified the books in question nor what section of the library they are kept in.

I am a retired Navy veteran who has seven grandchildren, none of which are in the Prattville area so not affected by this, one way or another.

Many would claim I have no skin in the game.

I hope to bring clarity to this issue and perhaps, allow it to be seen with clear eyes and very little emotion as I can see both sides.

I think most would agree a book burning is an extreme course of action that most would agree is NOT in anyone’s best interest.

Nor is exposing our children to things that should be reserved for a time when they are old enough to truly understand.

There is a reason that we don’t teach calculus and physics to 6th graders.  They simply are not mature enough to grasp the concepts.

I think what would defuse the issue is to ask the parents in a panel of 5 to review the books in question and determine by vote if it is safe to expose to children or not.

I think the library should select a shelf behind the circulation desk to store those books that are deemed inappropriate for children.

That makes the information available to parents should they have questions and have a need to educate themselves.

I think the people of Prattville should thank the CLEAN UP PRATTVILLE group for their diligence and I think the library staff deserve a hand for the job they do each and every day.

Neither group wants to harm the children of Prattville.   Let’s all focus on what both sides can agree on and together put together a compromise where the winners are the kids.
