Two checks were presented to the Autauga County School Board last week by Prattville Mayor Bill the City of Prattville totaling over $1.6 million.

The funds are on behalf of the City of Prattville and derive from a portion of a one-cent sales tax by the city. When the one-cent sales tax was set to expire, discussions began about finding a way to keep the sales tax, but use the funds in a way that can benefit different city departments, Parks and Recreation, infrastructure and education.

Since that original decision, the money has been collected, and has now been distributed to the Autauga County School Board. The Board will be required to issue reporting on how the money is used.

These specific funds given to the Autauga County Schools must be used for public education purposes within the Corporate Limits of Prattville, as well as Prattville High School and the Autauga County Technical Center.

From this point on, Mayor Bill Gillespie said that the board will receive monthly checks, which could average between $80 to $90 thousand dollars.

This agreement will remain in place for five years, Mayor Gillespie said.
