The Women in the Making Club at Millbrook Middle School held a presentation during their March 7th meeting. Kalia Cook, a nurse and a Professor of Nursing at AUM, talked to the young ladies about having good character and making good decisions.

She also incorporated hands-on activities to keep the girls engaged.

“Good character is demonstrated by what you do when no one is watching, said Cook.

During the meeting, Cook discussed what integrity is and talked about the importance of finding true friends. The girls learned about choosing like-minded students to be their friends, such as students who care about their behavior and their grades. Cook had the girls complete a questionnaire in which the girls learned more about themselves. They had to come up with adjectives that described them and why. They also gave their short and long-term goals. The young ladies were very attentive and asked questions throughout the meeting.

“This was another great meeting with our young ladies at the school. There was great dialogue between the girls and with Cook. We appreciate Kalia Cook for coming and speaking about building character to our girls,” said Letitia Ruffin-Johnson, assistant Principal at Millbrook Middle School.

Women in the Making is a mentoring club that is new at MMS.  It is focused on young ladies from the school and they learn about their self-esteem, character building, and making good decisions. They also do community projects, getting to know one another and becoming a sisterhood.
