The Elmore County Board of Education honored area school crossing guards at the regular meeting held Tuesday at the Central Office in Wetumpka, with a proclamation. Board member Wendell Saxon introduced the proclamation.
“I have never been so excited to introduce a proclamation,” Saxon said. “My colleagues and I all agree that this is long overdue and well-intended.”
School Crossing Guard Recognition Week will be observed Feb. 6-10. According to Saxon, crossing guards are valuable because they ensure the safety of students as they walk to and from school.
“Crossing guards provide a valuable service in the community to ensure the safe passage of our youngest, most vulnerable pedestrians, children walking between home and school,” Saxon read from the proclamation.
“School crossing guards typically serve with dedication regardless of harsh weather, split shifts, or heavy traffic,” Saxon continued.
Elmore County Superintendent of Education Richard Dennis also expressed appreciation to the dedicated crossing guards who serve.
“What they do is invaluable,” Dennis said. “I am so thankful for what you do for our students and getting everyone through those intersections. It’s not just getting children across the street. In many cases, you are talking about major intersections and highways that they have to manage. I want you (crossing guards) to understand that we very much appreciate what you have done for us, and what you continue to do for us each and every day.”
While there were four crossing guards present to accept the proclamation to honor them, this proclamation honors all of the men and women throughout the county who work tirelessly to ensure student safety.
