The City of Prattville joined with the American Legion Post 122 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1349 at the Autauga County Courthouse on Veterans Day for a respectful remembrance and to honor for all Veterans.

Members of the General John Archer Elmore Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution placed wreaths in front of memorials on the lawn of the courthouse in remembrance for service, patriotism and dedication of Autauga County residents.

Retired Colonel Christine Prewitt was the primary speaker. She has served many roles during her military career, including Air Force Group Commander and Pilot. Today she still serves in Civil Service.

Jerry Starnes also addressed the crowd. He is the newly elected House District 88 representative and a Lt. Colonel with the Alabama Army National Guard. Served tours multiple tours overseas as a military police officer.

The National Anthem was sung by Joseph Colotario of Post 122.

The Invocation was offered by Martha Kaye Bridges, Past President Department of Alabama American Legion Auxiliary and current President of Post 122 Auxiliary.

On Bugle for the Playing of Taps was Alex Hoffman.

Members of the Prattville JROTC Color Guard posted the colors, and respectfully honored those who remain Missing In Action during a special presentation.

Prattville Mayor Bill Gillespie told the audience that heroes are made by the paths they choose. He thanked all veterans who took their path in the military. “Thank you for answering the call of duty and having the honor and courage to defend the community, this state and this nation,” Gillespie said. “Veterans who served, served with the love of God, country and the American way of life. We owe you a debt of gratitude.”

Gillespie said that critical freedoms we often take for granted, are protected by our military and veterans. They include Freedom of religion, speech, self-government and the American way of life.

He thanked Veterans, many of whom continue to serve their communities once they end military service.

“The road to peace, democracy and our American way of life has been paved by blood, sweat and tears of veterans and their families. Welcome home veterans. Prattville loves you. May God continue to bless us one and all.”

Following the event, everyone was invited back to American Legion Post 122 for lunch. Everyone is also reminded that banners honoring local veterans can be found hanging in historic downtown Prattville, a project that has become very popular over the years.
