PRATTVILLE: A depression in the road caused by two pipes underground on South Court Street directly in front of the county’s Driver’s License Office caused traffic rerouting as county crews came out to investigate and eventually resolve the problem.
According to Director of Public Works for the City of Prattville Dale Gandy, the depression occurred because of a water line, which crosses on top of a sewer line.
“There was a depression in the road and the PD (Police Department) found it,” he said. “There is a sewer line in the street and a water line crosses directly over the top. The water line put a hole in the sewer line.”
Gandy said that both lines could be as much as 50-60 years old and the sewer line is a terra cotta pipe. He added that with today’s code, this probably wouldn’t have happened because the pipes would not have been placed the way they were.
“The Water Works Board is going to move their water line,” Gandy said, adding that there will also be an emergency locate to check for utilities. “The road will be closed the rest of the day.”
