April is the month of the military child, recognizing and thanking those who are children of servicemembers and veterans. A proclamation from the White House explains “This month — and every month — we share our gratitude for these children.  We recognize the hardships they face and commit to supporting the physical, social, and emotional health and safety of their families.”

At Holtville High School this month we showed our gratitude to these awesome children by hosting a “Military Child Day” where everyone was encouraged to wear purple in support and also hosted a luncheon for students whose parents are active members of the United States military. These students deal with homelives many of us cannot even imagine, and we are grateful to them for their service in helping their families be successful while their parents are on their tours of duty. This is a sacrifice they didn’t choose, yet one they willingly give each day.

While we recognized all the students, one special young lady stands out and she has been selected as a finalist for the Operation Homefront “Military Child of the Year.” Operation Homefront is a national not for profit entity, and they “Build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive—not simply struggle to get by—in the communities that they’ve worked so hard to protect.” Brae Lee Morris, a Senior at Holtville High, was chosen out of thousands of students across the nation and was the only student selected to represent Alabama. Brae Lee is the daughter of Air National Guard O5 Lieutenant Colonel Leeann Chavers. Brae Lee is very active at Holtville and goes above and beyond every day. She is the Editor of The Lakusa Yearbook, Student Government President, Senior Class Vice President, and is also active in Junior Civitan, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, National Honor Society, and DECA.

We are so proud of you Brae Lee and we wish you all the best while you continue your education at the University of Alabama! You truly show what it means to have BULLDOG PRIDE!
