Coosada Elementary School in Millbrook, Alabama participated in Career Week on March 14th through the 18th. The theme for this year was “I can be virtually anything.”

Before COVID-19 students from the school were able to learn about different careers by having volunteers come to the school during Career Week and talk about their career in person. This year, volunteers did zoom meetings on computer and interacted with the students virtually instead of in person.

Valena Agee and Daphne McClendon, counselors at CES, spent a considerable amount of time to set up all the meetings with volunteers.

“Mrs. McClendon and Mrs. Agee, counselors at CES, worked hard to ensure the students are emerged in several different career paths,”said Lakyn Northcutt, a 2nd grade teacher at CES.  “Students participated in dress up days throughout the week. As an option for the students, they could create a poster for a contest of the career they would like to do when they are older and three winners were chosen. The school’s favorite part of the whole week were the zoom meetings that the counselors provided with different volunteers throughout the Elmore County area.”

Northcutt said the volunteers showed off their careers and what they love most about what they do. Students spent thirty minutes with each volunteer and asked specific questions afterwards. “Some of our volunteers included and Aerospace and STEM Education Program Manager, 911 Emergency Dispatcher, Marine Scientist, Chemo Nurse, Fighter Pilot, and so much more,” Northcutt said. “The students at CES loved learning the different career paths that they can take. It is such a fantastic way to impact our youth in such an important way,”

First-grade teacher Brittany Lanier said the week was a tremendous amount of fun, and she loved the creative questions students asked during the zoom meetings.

“I have had several students tell me that they want to be doctors or teachers when they grow up after watching the zooms. The dress up days were such a big hit, and even though the students are young, it opened up a lot of conversations about their futures. I really appreciate all the hard work that the counselors, Mrs. McClendon and Mrs. Agee, put into career week to make it so informational and fun for our students.”

  • Wednesday- I can go Virtually Anywhere!- Wear a College T-shirt or Jersey.
