The Marbury High School Varsity Soccer Teams headed to the West Alabama Invitational Tournament over the weekend held in Tuscaloosa Alabama. The varsity boys team played three games with varsity girls playing five.

The Bulldogs’ Varsity boys team played hard against their opponents, playing through three rounds of games. Marbury played against Sipsey Valley with a score of 3-0, Tuscaloosa High School with a score of 5-0, and Holt High School with a score of 4-1. Logan Lawrence recorded the Bulldogs only goal.

The Bulldogs Varsity girls played five games in this tournament. The Varsity girls’ defense played lights-out in their appearances, allowing just one goal in five matches. Keeper Mackenzie Smith held strong with four shut out games.

The girls won their first game with a shutout against Demopolis 3-0 with goals scored by Lexie Wilson, Kendal Bruner, and Emma Wainwright.

Their next opponent was Hillcrest High School. The girls took this game 2-1.  Hillcrest recorded the only goal against the Bulldogs throughout the tournament. Lexi Wilson and Kendell Bruner each scored for the Bulldogs in their win.

The final three gamers were held Saturday. The first game against Tuscaloosa County was a low scoring game with Bulldogs’ Lexi Wilson scoring the game’s only goal for a 1-0 win.

The semi-final match was next, with the Bulldogs playing against Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Litzy Torcious and Kendal Bruner both scored goals for the Bulldogs win, with a score of 2-0 sending the girls on to the next round in the Championship game.

In that game, the Bulldogs took on Tuscaloosa County and took home the Championship after a shut-out game 2-0!

Congratulations Bulldogs!

Marbury Coach Thomas Sowell said, “The Boys played hard during the tournament against tough competition, and although it was not the outcome that we wanted, I am proud of how they continued to play hard through adversity.

“I am beyond proud of how our girls’ team competed in the West Alabama Invitational tournament. This is the first tournament win in Marbury girls’ soccer history. It came against a few very tough teams including wins over an undefeated 6A school and two wins over a 7A school. The tournament was a huge success for our girls’ program and would not have been possible without their hard work, perseverance, and determination.” SEE MORE PHOTOS OF BOTH THE BOYS AN GIRLS TEAMS BELOW.
