During the month of January, 2022 the Library Club at Airport Road Intermediate School sponsored a service project. The library club is made up of eight students and two sponsors. The students were collecting items needed to make Valentine gift baskets for Assisted Living and Nursing Home residents. A list of needed items was given to all students in the beginning of January to homeroom teachers and a list was posted outside the library door as well.
Items could include Chapstick, packs of tissue, word search books, pens, hand lotions, and magazines. Since some residents cannot have sugar or were on a special diet, candy and food items was not on the list.
Debbie Jones is the Media Specialist at the library for ARIS and spoke to EAN about this service project. “ARIS library club members collected items from fellow students, teachers, and parents to fill surprise Valentine baskets for assisted living residents at Autumn Place and The Gables in Millbrook. Items in the baskets included soaps, lotions, tissues, small books, room decor, cards or games, valentine cards, and a stuffed animal. Library club members were able to make 22 gift baskets. Baskets were delivered on Friday, February 11th,” said Jones.
Sponsors of the Library Club, Debbie Jones and Breannan Dunkerson would like thank all those who donated items. “This is a great group of students. They enjoyed making the baskets and filling out Valentine messages for all residents,” Jones said.
One of the member benefits as a library club member is to help shelve books in the library when they have extra time. They are also working on their second book study of the year.
