On Saturday, January 15th 2022, a S.T.E.A.M workshop event took place for children ages seven through 13 at the Creative Arts Center in Prattville, Alabama. S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The cost was only $5 for each student and parents were encouraged to call ahead and register the event ahead of time due to limited season.

Two sessions were available and each could hold up to 10 children.

Barbara Simpson, who has been the Cultural Arts and Special Events Manager for 13 years, was in charge of putting on this event for the children. Tanner Parrish also helped with this fun event.

The children sat down and waited for what fun projects they were going to be making. First, each of them learned how to use straight lines to make a curve. All they needed was a ruler, paper, and colored pencils. Simpson demonstrated each step for the students and worked on their level to accomplish the goal.

Second, every student received a round wooden circle and tape. They could use the tape to make lines on the wooden circle in any direction. The paint colors for this project were yellow, purple, and green. Do these colors sound familiar? These colors are Mardi Gras colors and every circle was very unique and exquisite.

Third, all the students received a piece of wood with little nails all around the wood and pieces of yarn. In the first project, the students made straight lines curve with a ruler and a colored pencil. For the last project, the students used yarn and did the exact same measurement from the first project making the yarn curves as from straight lines.

Math and art came together to make a beautiful masterpiece. Each student received a take home math card to build a project on their own time. It was a great day for learning and fun for the children.
