The Tallassee City Council, along with Mayor John Hammock celebrated the 100th birthday of Mrs. Lueverne Simmons during Tuesday’s regular meeting with a proclamation that designates Dec. 15 as Lueverne Simmons Day.

Mrs. Simmons was born in Elmore County on Nov. 25, 1921. Her mother, Mary Butler, raised four daughters including Lueverne and her sisters Fannie Mae Splunge, Susie McConagha and Roberta Adams.

Mrs. Simmons was married to Alex Simmons and they had two daughters, Sherrell Denmark and Frances Leonard (deceased). She has two grandchildren who are the loves of her life, Sharae Denmark Canady and Clifford Leonard.

“Now, Therefore, be it resolved that December 15, 2021, is hereby proclaimed ‘Lueverne Simmons Day’ in the City of Tallassee, Alabama. The Office of the Mayor of the City of Tallassee is proud to salute Lueverne Simmons on the occasion of her 100th birthday celebration and would like to thank her for the many contributions to the City of Tallassee,” Mayor Hammock said.

Mrs. Simmons spent many years working with children as a babysitter for children in the community.

She is a longtime member of Chehaw AME Zion Church in Tuskegee. She remains active in church, where she serves as an honorary usher.

Mrs. Simmons enjoys spending time outdoors, tending to the flowers in the garden she created from the ground up. When she isn’t in the garden, she is probably in the kitchen because even today at 100 years of age, she also loves to cook. Her specialty is homemade biscuits.
