Not much changed regarding mask policies for the Autauga County School System after the Board of Education met for a special called meeting on Thursday afternoon.

Autauga County Superintendent Timothy Tidmore said that masks will still be optional, but that he and others on the BoE are closely monitoring the covid positivity rates of students and faculty alike.

“Cases are increasing, and there’s a few more teachers [having to leave and quarantine] every day. I’ve got at least two central office employees that are out and awaiting results,” Tidmore said. “The good thing is that we’ve had several employees that have been vaccinated that did not have to isolate because of being exposed to a positive case, so that’s seemed to of helped some.”

Tidmore explained that numbers regarding students and teachers who are out and tested positive for the virus, are to the BoE’s website. Those numbers will reflect covid percentages in the Autauga County System over the past week.

“We want to be as transparent as possible,” Tidmore said.

Autauga County’s decision comes just a little over a week after Elmore County handed out a mask mandate for grades 3-12.

The Autauga County Board of Education went into a 45-minute executive session in the middle of the meeting to discuss and vote on “employee action.”

The BoE’s next regularly scheduled meeting will take place on Sept. 13.
