It was wet and wild Wednesday for the Prattville YMCA. The afternoon marked the fourth annual Sink-A-Palooza event, hosted by the Prattville YMCA Emerging Leaders.
Local churches, businesses and fire responders and more participated in the event. Family and friends had the opportunity to watch their loved ones float and paddle around the pool while they donated money in an effort to sink their ship.
Three options were available for those wanting to donate, including $25 to shoot water cannons at participants, $50 to dump an entire bucket of ice on your favorite team member, or $100 to make someone walk to the plank. Several participants got multiple buckets of ice dumped on them at one time.
Once a team reached the $2,000 threshold, their ship was officially “sunk.” Those who were sunk could still continue to participate and earn extra donations.
Teams participating represented the YMCA Emerging Leaders Club, the Prattville Fire Department, Prattville First United Methodist Church, Aronov Realty, Prattville Police Department, WSFA Weather and Bo Evans Realty.
All proceeds for the event go to the YMCA’s Coach-a-Child Scholarship Fund, which helps to assist underprivileged children in the area.
“We went out and recruited these teams, and they graciously agreed to participate with us today,” said Keith Cantrell, Assistant General Director of Prattville YMCA. “Our Emerging Leaders do a great job of putting this event on, and they simply just have a heart and passion for our YMCA.”
The sink-a-palooza event is only one of many events that the YMCA puts on to support the Coach-a-Child Scholarship Fund, coupled with their annual Great Grits Cook-Off and Kevin Turner Golf Classic.
Last year, in the midst of strict Covid regulations, the YMCA was able to reach $14,000 in donations, Cantrell said. He explained that the number was miraculous, and that it couldn’t have been done without great support from the community.
There will be additional fundraisers coming up, and we will have updates for the grand total raised.
