Three Millbrook Street Department workers were recognized at Tuesday’s Council meeting for their heroic assistance helping to save a Millbrook man the morning of Aug. 2.

Trey Hundley, Colby Nelson and Chad Erickson were working to pick up limbs that morning, but ended up doing a lot more.

Jeff Neuber and his wife, Chris, were working in the garage of their Millbrook home getting things from the attic.

“We have one of those pull downstairs. I got up there and the whole unit, the stairs and the casing, fell out with me on it,” Jeff said. “I came crashing to the garage floor. I hit hard. The ladder folded up and my leg was tangled. Chris watched the whole thing. I was lying there and really hurting. She went and asked a neighbor for help.”

However, it was obvious more help was needed.

“She (Chris) just started praying. Right at that time, Chris heard the street department truck coming down the road. Normally it is just one truck, but this particular day it was two. Chris flagged them down…these three people came and it took all of them to get me out. It was a miracle. They freed me and the ambulance came, and the fire department. Everyone just did a wonderful job.”

There were a lot of bumps and bruises and a fractured scapula, but the doctor told Jeff it was a miracle that he lived.

“The doctor looked at me and said it was a miracle I am still alive today. These people (the three workers) were part of it. You guys mean a lot to me,” Jeff said.

Trey Hundley took the praise in stride, and even had a little humor to add.

“(Mr. and Mrs. Neuber are pretty serious about their limbs. I thought she was coming to talk to me about that,” Hundley said. “She told me her husband had fell. I went in and saw how he was and knew I couldn’t do it by myself. These others guys came and helped and we were able to get him out and try to make him comfortable until the paramedics came. No recognition is needed or nothing, it was just something that we felt like we had to do.”

Jeff is recovering, and said he will forever be grateful to the three Street Department employees.

“When we had the call about this, I knew this was something we needed to know more about,” Mayor Al Kelley told the crowd. “These Street Department guys do a phenomenal job every day, and on this particular day they went above and beyond. I am just extremely happy that Jeff and Chris could be with us today, and that everything worked out.”
