FROM LARRY CAVER, PRESIDENT

Old Autauga Historical Society (OAHS) News

Autauga County – Update on MULBERRY SCHOOLHOUSE- Volunteers were able to finish the interior floor this week. All that remains is outer row for trim. Volunteers included Phillip, Benny, Frank, Rusty, and John. The guys were treated to a celebration lunch of homemade spaghetti, salad, French bread, and homemade pecan pies provided by Linda Walker.

This COMPLETES Phase II. OAHS thanks everyone who donated monetarily towards the new floor and framing materials. We were unexpectedly faced with higher prices for the WOOD, but were able to raise the extra funds needed to make this happen regardless! OAHS greatly thanks all the volunteers who have worked faithfully since March to make the new floor and supports possible. OAHS also thanks every person who provided meals for the volunteers.

These include: Linda Walker, Libby Ousley, Beth DeBusk, Lynn Langston Burrell, Mary Jane Martin Dennis, Anne Shackelford, Angie Cousins, Richard Hill Family, Barbara Motley, and others. The might (mite) of many can accomplish great things!

Phase III, which includes a new ceiling, will start in early 2022. We are accepting donations now towards these expenses.

Mulberry Schoolhouse served as a school for black children in Autauga County. It is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse to do so in the county. It was built around 1900 and is located between Autaugaville and Statesville on CR9 at Mallards Chapel.
