This organization is always seeking two things. New members, and ways to help Veterans or the community.

A huge part of helping Veterans is hosting multiple fundraisers throughout the year. A big push by the American Legion Post 133 is the Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Last month the crew hosted their annual fundraiser that raised more than $10,000. Those funds this year will be split between the Owassa Foundation of Clanton and the Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Owassa Foundation is a veteran-owned organization that helps homeless veterans, or veterans in need. The Legacy Scholarship Fund helps with educational scholarships to children of fallen or disabled veterans.

Throughout the year it is nearly impossible to find the members, including the Legion Riders, Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, just sitting back to relax. If you ask Commander Leslie Looney, she will tell you there is always work to be done when it comes to Veterans and their families or the community, and no time to waste.

Most recently American Legion Post 133 helped fill an 18-wheeler with food and supplies for the Mobile area after devastating Hurricane Sally.

The organization is an integral part of the Millbrook Police Department’s Annual Operation Blue Santa, which collects toys and donations for area children in need at Christmas time. They have regular dinners to raise funds for other agencies, or a veteran in need. They remember Veterans who are deceased by placing American flags on their grave.

They have been known to build ramps, fix roofs or whatever is needed for a Veteran’s family. And they don’t brag about it, because it is just part of their belief system. For God and Country!

You can drop by the post every Friday night for a delicious steak dinner, whether you are a member or not! But come early, as they tend to sale out. Make sure to ask them about their weekend breakfast as well.

When you pass by the building on Hwy. 14, make sure to watch the sign out front, because new information is updated frequently. And, again, there is always something on the calendar that is dedicated to raising funds to help someone in need and further their programs.

Recently the American Legion Post 133 hosted a Salute to First Responders and a 911 Memorial Day Remembrance. At that event, they offered a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner in September to members of the Millbrook Fire and Police Departments.

If you want to be involved with a high-energy group of people, patriotic to their core, God-fearing, dedicated to service and that also know how to have fun, become a part of the American Legion. Call them for more details at 334.285.3730.
