Municipal Elections Timeline: A Series of Steps Must Be Taken Before Election Day Aug. 25, 2020

The majority of municipalities in Alabama hold municipal elections on the same day and all must follow the state’s election laws. Here is the timeline and information regarding municipal elections in Millbrook, Prattville, Deatsville, Elmore and Coosada. 

July 7: The Mayor shall give notice of all municipal elections by publishing notice thereof in a newspaper published in the city or town, and, if no newspaper is published in the city or town, then by posting notices thereof in three public places in the city or town.

July 21: Last day to qualify for office – by 5:00 pm.

July 26: Last day to establish residency to vote

August 10: Last day for council to appoint election officials

August 20: Last day for a voter to apply for a regular absentee ballot and the last day to publish a list of qualified voters

August 25: Municipal Election Day. Polls must be opened from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Note: Candidates may appoint a poll watcher to observe voting procedures in the polling place. The appointment must be made in writing and filed with the appropriate election officials. 

Qualifying fees for candidates are not uniform throughout the state. Here are the required fees for candidates in our area:

City of Millbrook – Mayor $50.00; City Council $30.00

City of Prattville – Mayor $ 50.00;    City Council $25.00

City of Deatsville – Mayor $ 50.00;    City Council $ 10.00

Town of Elmore – Mayor $ 50.00; City Council $10.00

Town of Coosada – Mayor $ 50.00;   City Council $10.00

Polling places for municipal elections are established by the city council.

Millbrook polling places:

Ward One – Fire Station at 3820 Grandview Road;

Ward Two – Millbrook Civic Center at 3168 Park Circle;

Ward Three – Millbrook Community Players Auditorium at 5720 Main Street;

Ward Four – Tri City Baptist Church at 4831 Highway 14;

Ward Five – Fire Station at 3210 Deatsville Highway.

Prattville polling places:

District 1: Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce, 131 N. Court Street;

District 2: First Missionary Baptist Church, 192 Seventh Street and,

                  Spring Hill AME Zion Church, 303 County Road 4 East;

District 3: Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 511 N. Memorial Drive;

District 4: Glynwood Baptist Church, 376 McQueen Smith Road North;

District 5: Heritage Baptist Church, 1357 S. Memorial Drive;

District 6: Trinity United Methodist Church, 610 Fairview Avenue;

District 7: Doster Memorial Community Center, 424 S. Northington Street

Deatsville polling places: Fire Dept.

Elmore polling place: Mercer-Carmichael Community Center

Coosada polling place:  Coosada Town Hall
