Humane Society of Elmore County Announces Operational Changes Due to COVID-19; Donations Still Needed

FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REA CORD

OPERATIONAL CHANGES DUE TO COVID-19:

Q: Are we still taking in animals? YES, BUT PLEASE READ BELOW:

–        Unless there are dire circumstances, we ask that owners NOT surrender your animal to us for the next few weeks. We need to be very careful about our limited space and do not want to have to end up saying no to ALL owner surrenders.

–        For Open-Admission Shelters like us, the first priority is to the safety of the community and animals that are abandoned, lost, displaced, neglected or being treated cruelly that law enforcement/animal control needs to address. We need to keep space open as much as possible during this challenging time.

–        This link has contact info for Animal Control contacts:

http://www.elmorehumane.org/animal-control-contacts.html

–        If you have a dog or cat with a litter, or find a litter and can, please hold those puppies/kittens safely at home until they are eight weeks old if at all possible. Call us at 334-567-3377 if you want to talk to us about them.

–        Please stop any and all feral cat trapping and let them be. Those cats have been around a very long time and now is just not the time to be continuing trapping to not only help us in the Shelter but to simply reduce the traffic to our Shelter. Yes, we realize this will result in more kittens but for now stop trapping.

–        If you find a pet, we ask that, if at all possible AND you can do so safely, that you keep that pet and do the networking to hopefully get it reunited with an owner so it does not have to come to our Shelter.

If it has a Rabies tag please call the Vet on the tag to see if the owner can be identified or call our Shelter (334-567-3377) so we can assist. Any pet in our area with a Tuskegee Tag may very well be an adopted Shelter pet and we can look in our records to perhaps identify the owner.

Yes, we are happy to scan a found pet for a microchip as will most Veterinarians. Just give us a call and we will come outside to scan that pet.

Please call us so we can do a FOUND Report and if you have lost your pet please also call us so we can do a LOST Report – don’t wait, call us soonest (334-567-3377)

Post the lost or found pet (with photos if at all possible) to our Lost & Found Pets in Elmore County Alabama Facebook page. Please post a phone number you can be contacted at as well. Post to neighborhood pages, neighborhood apps, etc. The more you post the greater the likelihood of finding the owner.

You can also contact us via email at hselco@bellsouth.net or message us on our Lost & Found Pets in Elmore County Alabama Facebook page.

–        Our INTAKE services are restricted to residents of Elmore County and animals found within Elmore County.  We will refuse animals not from Elmore County (unless a return of one of our adopted pets) and valid Identification is required to surrender a pet.

Q: Are we doing Adoptions? YES, we truly want to do adoptions but have to adjust to the below noted changes:

–        Please do not come to the Shelter to ‘just look around” as we are limiting access to only those people whose Adoption Application has been approved and have set up a time to come visit. So yes, we are moving to an appointment system until the COVID-19 situation abates.

–        Before coming to our Shelter, check out our pets here:

For dogs: https://www.petfinder.com/search/dogs-for-adoption/us/al/wetumpka/

For cats: https://www.petfinder.com/search/cats-for-adoption/us/al/wetumpka/

You can also see our pets on our Facebook page (right side) and on our website at www.elmorehumane.org

–        If you see a pet on-line you are interested in, contact us at hselco@bellsouth.net so we confirm the pet is still available and can send you our Adoption Application as that is the first step.  If you are unsure of a specific pet, describe what you are looking for (breed type, size, coat type, sex, age range, etc) and we will work hard to see if we have some potential matches.  Once approved we will coordinate with you for when to come to the Shelter.

–        Being an Elmore County resident is not a requirement for adoptions many of our adopted pets live all over the world.

Q: Are you allowing Volunteers? No, we are sorry, but all volunteering and Community Service work is suspended until further notice.

Q:  Are you taking donations at the Tail’s End Thrift Store?· No.  Our Tail’s End Thrift Store is closed for donations and sales.  We will let everyone know when it will reopen.

Q: Are you taking animal supporting donations at the Shelter?

–        YES! And we are immensely grateful to all who came through for us in a huge way with bleach and the like. Our normal supplier has been unable to get bleach for our normal delivery, so we are immensely grateful to those folks who have found and brought us bleach especially.  Our biggest needs are:

Bleach

Fabuloso liquid detergent

Newspaper

LONG Shredded paper (NOT the small crosscut shreds please)

–        Donations can be left on our benches out front Mon-Fri 8-5 & Sat 8-4 and we are happy to give you a tax receipt if you need one. Please do not leave Bleach or Fabuloso out front after hours.

–        Financial donations are always appreciated since our Tail’s End Thrift Store is closed and our $10K Drawdown has been postponed to a date TBD.  Donations can be made in any number of ways:

You can mail in checks to us at 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL 36092

You can donate via a number of methods on our website at http://www.elmorehumane.org/monetary-donations.html

You can call us at 334-567-3377 to donate over the phone with a Credit Card.

Q: Do you need fosters/how can I foster?

–        Right now we are fine and the fosters we have are covering our need. This can change however the longer this goes, so:

–        If you are interested in fostering for HSEC, please email us at hselco@bellsouth.netand we will send you our foster application and agreement. Once we see what you are capable of and wanting to foster, we can get you started as the need arises.
