Auburn vs Georgia: Preview

By Andrew Edwards

Staff Writer

The SEC matchup of the weekend features two teams with elite defenses.

The deep south’s oldest rivalry is back, and Auburn and Georgia both come into this game with a lot on the line – Georgia, in particular.

With a loss, the Bulldogs will be all but knocked out of the college football playoff discussion (even if they do win the SEC title). Jake Fromm and company will need to pass the ball better in this game because the Tigers are, to put it lightly, very difficult to run the ball against. Georgia comes into the game with the 69thbest passing attack in the country, a number that’s not going to be good enough to effectively disrupt a defense like Auburn’s.

D’Andre Swift is a special talent for Georgia at the running back position, but he’s going to need a lot of help if he wants to get past guys like Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson.

Meanwhile, the Tigers come into this game with passing issues of their own. They currently rank 90thin passing yards per game, so like Georgia, they rely heavily on the running backs. AU is 20thin the country in rush yards per game and may have a new star in freshman D.J. Williams. Regardless, points are going to be difficult to come by for Auburn. It very well may come down to which defense can create short fields with turnovers.

Player to Watch: AUB K Anders Carlson

Carlson has been in a little bit of a rut lately. He’s needs to get out of it as soon as possible because points will be crucial in this matchup. Every field goal will matter, so Carlson needs to be on his A game this Saturday.

Key Matchup: Bo Nix vs Georgia Secondary

Georgia’s secondary is about as elite as it comes and Bo Nix has struggled all year against good defenses. That has to change Saturday. Watch to see if Malzahn gives Nix some easy throws, helping their offense to open up the run game. If Auburn is able to do this and control some clock in the meantime, they have a very good chance at winning.
